BIRTH CENTENARY OF THATHA - ORAL TRIBUTES (Report by Radha)
Dance Tribute was followed by speeches by 5 of the chosen speakers and the first one was Kanananna. He spoke in Thamizh and said that he would like to do so, so that he can talk more and tell more things about thatha. He recalled how close or closest he was to his periya mama and his sense of humour and the trust and confidence thatha had always had in him. He also spoke how when the bell rang long thatha connoted it to ‘wooden dog giving birth to an young one’ and also the special affection paati had bestowed on him. He recalled their fine generous nature and what a distinct person he was beyond compare.
The next speaker was Ranga Mama who spoke in English and being a neighbour, a relative and a co teacher recalled the high caliber of Thatha and his sense of humour. Once Ramu Anna(metur Anna) and others had gone to a function when thatha called out for all that ‘meals was ready-we may go’. So when they landed up at meals hall they found that no food was ready yet. So Ramu Anna had declared, ‘this is again usual mama’s false alarm’.
Next, Shri.Vishwanathan alias Ambi spoke very nicely on three aspects. One thatha and paati’s relationship with their family and how they were all closely associated , thatha’s fine qualities as a human being and thatha as his class teacher. He said that ‘thatha’ was good at exaggerating things and therefore was good at teaching history and his classes used to be looked forward for and lively. He had inspired many and had foresight and visionary and he made his daughter(Vanaja),Amma in those days a graduate and latter a post graduate and many followed her foot steps, which won many applause. He was kind to students and was very patient.
Next I spoke that this was a rare opportunity to share the treasure I posses. On thatha’s fine qualities and also their distinct sense of humour and narrated the palkozhukatai incident and how I had discussed with thatha about ‘gurukulam’ way of learning had attracted me not realizing for a long time that thatha has been my ‘guru’ and vedhachala garden has been gurukulam for me. I was thankful to me husband because of whose cooperation I could like in Ved Gar with thatha and paati during which time I learnt about them better. How even on the last day on 23rd June 1998 when at 12 o’clock midnight he was having pain and I had massaged some pain balm and he was asking me all sorts of questions like philosophical, general about like when a 3 year old should have certain duties what and why problems are caused to some and not for some etc., That I had been proud for a long time that I was able clarify all thatha’s doubt but only very much latter I realized that it was not me clarifying his doubts but he was making sure that I have the lessons of life correctly and till he breathed the last he ensured he was a good teacher. Also, he had asked me ‘if you don’t leave to go out of the world at 90, when would I Go?’
Last but not the least (rather the most) to speak was parthasarathy mama who spoke three specific points. First about qualities he learnt from thatha, then qualities he admired and how thatha had inspired him and about how he learnt the attitude about money. How it gives him more pleasure to spend on others rather than on himself like his father. Also, the habit of looking into dictionary and subsequently his attraction for crosswords etc., He said that nothing was taught but let to learn by living example, thatha. As usual his speech was quick witted, intelligent and truthful on the whole enjoyable.
After this, it was time for the release of the Souvenir.
